After capturing their fourth South Coast Conference championship in a row, the Cerritos College women's track and field team swept the awards that go with being champions. Headlining the awards was sophomore thrower Destiny Talalemotu (Long Beach Millikan HS), who was named the Field Athlete of the Meet after winning three conference championships. She was joined by sophomore Maria Orosco (Katella HS), who was named the Co-Running Athlete of the Meet, while sophomore sprinter Najia Hudspeth (Kennedy HS) was named the conference Running Athlete of the Year. Freshman Juanita Webster (Redlands HS) was named the conference's Field Athlete of the Year, with Michael Allen voted the Women's Coach of the Year for the seventh time and Lloyd Higgins the Assistant Coach of the Year for field events, the sixth time he's received the award.
The Falcons, who are the defending CCCAA State Champions, will compete in the Southern California Prelims at Antelope Valley College on Saturday.
Talalemotu won the conference championship in the shot put, discus and hammer, while she also holds the best marks in Southern Caliornia in the shot put (15.27 meters) and discus (49.77 meters), while ranking second in the hammer (54.34 meters) and third in the javelin (37.53 meters). Talalemotu won the state championship in the shot put and discus as a freshman in 2014, while she holds the school record in the shot put and hammer.
As for Orosco, she won the conference championship in the 800 meters and 1500 meters and ranks third in Southern California in the 1500 meters (4:47.32), while her time of 2:18.01 is the fifth best in Southern California. Hudspeth was also a three-event conference champion, winning both the 100 meters (11.70) and 200 meters (23.85), while also running a leg of the 400-meter relay team that came in first place. She currently has the fastest time in Southern California in both events, while her time is third on the college's top five list in the 100 meters and second in the 200 meters. As a member of both the 400-meter and 1600-meter relay teams, Hudspeth has helped the Falcons post the fastest time in Southern California in both events.
The versatile Webster has already won the Southern California Heptathlon championship and holds the best point total in the state (5188), which is also second on the school's top five list. She already has state A Qualifying marks in the 100-meter HH (14.18), high jump (1.69 meters), long jump (5.86 meters) and triple jump (12.38 meters), while her javelin throw of 35.18 meters is a state B Qualifying mark. Webster holds the best mark in Southern California in the 100-meter HH (2nd on the school's top five list), high jump (4th on the school's top five list) and triple jump (2nd on the school's top five list), while her long jump (5th on the school's top five list) is the second best.
